13- A yet to be named Stuntman, who is filling in for FORD while he recovers from a set injury, in “INDIANA JONES 5”

And let’s not forget all about the hundreds of international dubbing artists that have voiced the famous explorer in other countries!

Let’s learn a little bit more about “YOUNG INDIANA JONES”:

GEORGE LUCAS wrote an extensive timeline, detailing the life of “INDIANA JONES”, assembling the elements for about seventy episodes of this show, starting in 1905, and leading all the way up to the theatrical movies. Each outline, included the place, date, and the historical people “INDY” would meet in that episode, and would then be turned over to one the the series writers. When the series came to an end, twenty-eight of the seventy stories had been filmed.

FORD was offered the role of the “OLDER INDIANA JONES”, but he turned it down, since he thought television had nothing to offer his career. However, Ford appeared as a middle-aged “INDY” in season two, episode five, "YOUNG INDIANA JONES AND THE MYSTERY OF THE BLUES", where he recalled one of his early adventures.

Both seasons were filmed asymmetrically (out of sequence), so throughout the series, CARRIER appears in varying and inconsistent stages of puberty. During production of the television movies that followed the series, bridging sequences were filmed for the home video releases, leading to even more inconsistencies regarding the actor's ages.

PHOENIX was offered a chance to reprise his role as “YOUNG INDY” from “INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE” for the “CHRONICLES” T.V. series, but turned it down, since he didn't want to return to television.

LLOYD OWEN, who played “PROFESSOR HENRY WALTON JONES SR.” in “YOUNG INDIANA JONES”, is only one year younger than FLANERY. Coincidently SEAN CONNERY, who played “HENRY SR.” in “INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE”, is only 12 years older than ford!

Now let’s talk about the HARRISON FORD movies.

“INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM”:

Did you know that this film had unintentionally created the “PG-13” rating?

PG-13 COVER.jpg

That’s right! “INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM” inspired THE MPAA to make a new rating for films that are a bit more mature for a G or PG rating, but not disturbing enough for an R rating. The guys over at MENTAL FLOSS can explain it better than I can:

Think about this: a movie that includes a man pulling the still-beating heart out of another very-much-alive man who is then lowered into a searing pool of lava to die is rated a family-friendly PG rating by THE MOTION PICTURE ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA. Parents and audience members alike were taken aback by the violence in SPIELBERG’S second “INDIANA JONES” film, but the violence and horrific aspects weren’t enough to warrant an R rating (one that would cripple a film that relies so heavily on its targeted child demographic).Once a controversy about the violence in “TEMPLE OF DOOM” and “GREMLINS” (a film SPIELBERG Executive Produced) arose, Spielberg wrote to then-President of the MPAA JACK VALENTI suggesting an in-between rating for movies of similar ilk. The director suggested four new potential examples, including “PG-13,” “PG-14,” “PG-2” or “R-13,” which would limit or allow certain audience members admittance between PG and R-rated films. VALENTI soon enacted the new system, labeling Director JOHN MILIUS’ film “RED DAWN” with the first ever PG-13 rating.

Did you know that “GHOSTBUSTERS” star DAN AYKROYD makes a small cameo in this film?

DAN AYKROYD INDY 2 CAMEO.jpg

Although he uses a british accent and we never get a close up of his face, AYKROYD appears as the officer who escorts “INDY” and his friends to the plane at the airport. LUCAS AND SPIELBERG also appear as missionaries and PRODUCER FRANK MARSHALL is seen playing a tourist in the background!

Did you know that the diamond that appears at the start of “THE TEMPLE OF DOOM” is the same diamond that “INDY” searches for in “THE ADVENTURES OF YOUNG INDIANA JONES - CHAPTER 18: TREASURE OF THE PEACOCK’S EYE”?

INDY AND THE PEACOCK'S EYE.jpg

While inside “CLUB OBI WAN”, “INDIANA JONES” attempts to trade an ancient Chinese artifact for a beautiful diamond. Years after the film’s release, fans discovered that this was in fact the treasured “PEACOCK’S EYE”, an object “INDY” pursues as a young man in the television story “YOUNG INDIANA JONES AND THE TREASURE OF THE PEACOCK’S EYE” [A.K.A. “TAOYIJ - CHAPTER 18: TREASURE OF THE PEACOCK’S EYE”] In that adventure, “INDY” and his old friend “REMY BAUDOIN” [RONNY COUTTEURE] chase clues around the world to find the diamond, which supposedly had belonged to ALEXANDER THE GREAT. While “INDY” had given up his search, it certainly seems like he’s back on the hunt at the beginning of “THE TEMPLE OF DOOM” But, he unfortunately only came so close, and yet, so, so far, as he loses the object during the frenzied escape from the nightclub.

INDY AND REMY.jpg

[FLANERY AND COUTTEURE - I could not find an image of them without the logo.]

Did you know that the collapsing bridge scene had to be done in one take?

INDY BRIDGE.jpg

The climactic bridge collapse was one of the most complex shots to film. On location in SRI LANKA, the production crew luckily discovered a dam being constructed by British engineers in a massive valley. The team was hired to build a platform spanning the gorge. Filmed on the ninth day of shooting, every available camera was arranged across the valley (with GEORGE LUCAS himself manning one). The bridge’s steel cables were electrically rigged with explosives and mechanical dummies were laid in place. Everything had to work in one go. When the big moment came, the bridge successfully blew, sending the dummies (which were designed to kick and flail) 150 feet down to the rocks and water below.

And here’s two more “TEMPLE OF DOOM” facts:

The first time HARRISON FORD got on the suspension bridge, he ran from one end to the other. STEVEN SPIELBERG is terrified of heights and went out only 40 yards on either end.

“THE TEMPLE OF DOOM”  is SPIELBERG’S least favorite of the Indiana Jones movies, and feels the greatest thing he got out of the film was meeting KATE CAPSHAW, whom he later married.

SPIELBERG AND CAPSHAW.jpg

[SPIELBERG and his wife CAPSHAW - Who plays “INDY’S” love interest, “WILLIE SCOTT” in “INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM” - on “THE RED CARPET” at “THE GOLDEN GLOBES”.]

“INDIANA JONES AND THE RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK”:

Did you know that THE ARK OF THE COVENANT plot was inspired by a Dentist?

THE ARK 2.jpg

Way back in 1973—when Lucas was still cooking up his galaxy far, far away—he was also coming up with nascent ideas for Indiana Jones. He and fellow filmmaker PHILIP KAUFMAN got together for a few weeks to throw around concepts about archeology and the Nazis’ obsession with the occult for a potential movie, but KAUFMAN departed the project soon after when he was hired by CLINT EASTWOOD to develop “THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES” .The final film bears little resemblance to what the two began with, but KAUFMAN still has a “Story By” credit on Raiders because he was responsible for the film’s main plot point: THE ARK OF THE COVENANT The two were looking for a mystical plot device to move the story along, and KAUFMAN suggested the Ark because his childhood dentist had told him the story behind the Biblical artifact and its powers, and it had fascinated him ever since.

Did you know that the real reason that “INDY” was able to breath under water for so long is revealed in a deleted scene?

INDY SUB.jpg

Fans of the film have been wondering for a long time just how “INDY” managed to swim from the steamer ship to the Nazi submarine and then survive the trip all the way to the secret island where the ceremony with THE ARK takes place. The short answer is that he can hold his breath for a very, very long time, but a deleted scene from the film gives a better—if not implausible—answer. The scene shows Indy clutching the periscope of the Nazi sub that is conveniently above the water for the entire trip to the secret island, which explains how he managed to not drown. Spielberg thought the scene looked cheesy and scrapped it, hoping that audiences wouldn’t question the unresolved logistics considering the fantastical elements that would happen in the film’s climax.

Did you know that 7,000 to 10,000 snakes were cast for “RAIDERS’ WELL OF SOULS” scene?

[“SNAKES, WHY’D IT HAVE TO BE SNAKES?”]

And still that wasn’t enough. According to GOLIATH, the filmmakers had hoses cut into snake-like lengths, which snake-fearing Indiana would have preferred. The same goes for “MARION RAVENWOOD”, as played by KAREN ALLEN, though those are not her legs you see in some shots. They are the legs of the snake handler, who shaved his legs and borrowed “MARION’S” dress.

Of course they wouldn’t be real snakes without sound now would it?

Famed sound designer Ben Burtt recorded nearly all original sounds for the film. Indy’s distinct gunshot is an unprocessed live recording of a .30-30 Winchester rifle firing (he uses a .455 Smith & Wesson revolver in the film), and the embellished punching sounds come from Burtt hitting a pile of leather jackets and baseball gloves repeatedly with a baseball bat. The sounds for the snakes in the Well of Souls come from the layered noise of Burtt running his fingers through a cheese casserole made by his wife and of wet sponges being dragged across the grip tape on a skateboard. The strange emanations of the Ark ghosts are sea lion and dolphin cries filtered through a vocoder to give them a musical quality, and the sound of the lid being lifted off the Ark is actually Burtt lifting off the heavy top cover of his own toilet. Surprisingly, the sounds of Indy’s whip-cracks are simply outdoor recordings of Harrison Ford and sound effects recordist Gary Summers practicing snapping a bullwhip.

[BURTT at work!]

[SUMMERS, also at work!]

Did you know that it took Animal Trainers days to get the “CAPUCHIN MONKEY” to do the nazi salute?

[THE MONKEY also, also at work]

The insert scene where the small capuchin monkey gives the Nazi salute to the German spies was part of the film’s post-production pickup schedule—an allotted time to reshoot or tweak scenes from the principal production shoot—supervised by George Lucas at Elstree Studios in London. Despite the animal trainers training the monkey to perform the move prior to the shoot, they couldn’t get the monkey to do it during a take. At first, the animal trainers were tapping the monkey on the head to get a reaction, but days dragged on and the monkey didn’t do the proper salute. Finally, they resorted to dangling grapes with fishing line just off camera to provoke the monkey, and that was what got the little actor to do a good take. The final shot in the film is the monkey reaching for the grapes just above the frame.

Did you know that certain steps were taken to make “INDY” look the way that he does?

Indiana Jones' iconic costume (leather jacket, fedora, and whip) was decided on before the movie began. It was based on a concept painting, which was based on an old serial from the '30s.

jim_steranko_raiders01.jpg

[Original “RAIDERS” production art by JIM STERANKO.]

The night before the first day of shooting for Raiders of the Lost Ark, Harrison Ford lent his Swiss army knife to costume designer DEBORAH NADOOLMAN [now known as BEDORAH NADOOLMAN LANDIS]. Using the knife and a steel brush, NADOOLMAN aged the jacket, and had metal splinters in her hands for weeks.

2960_deborah-nadoolman-landis-640.jpg

To age Indiana's iconic hat, NADOOLMAN got the hat dirty, rolled it up, sat on it, and had Ford sit on it.

Did you know that two other classic SPIELBERG movies were born on the set of “RAIDERS”?

another-legendary-movie-was-scripted-on-the-set-of-raiders-of-the-lost-ark-photo-u2.jpeg

[“E.T.: THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL” - 1982]

“E.T.: THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL” was written by the late ex-wife of HARRISON FORD, MELISSA MATHISON. MATHISON was with SPIELBERG while on location shooting a scene for “RAIDERS” when the Director began sharing his idea for a movie about a boy and an alien becoming unlikely friends with MATHISON.

images.jpeg

[MATHISON]

Coincidentally, an early version of the “E.T.” concept was used as the inspiration for the movie “POLTERGEIST”

[“POLTERGEIST” - also from 1982]

Did you know that “E.T.” shares one more connection with “INDIANA JONES”?

PETER COYOTE, who plays the sympathetic government agent “KEYS” in “E.T.”, auditioned for the role of “INDY” during a MAY 1980 casting session held by SPIELBERG and LUCAS. COYOTE, who was given snippets of the “RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK” script along with a character outline of Indy, brought along a dashing fedora to accentuate his audition in hopes of wowing the two Hollywood heavyweights. But when he was told it was his turn to go, he tripped over the wiring of the lights that were set up in the room. His stumbling first impression was the furthest thing from the debonair, tough-guy “INDY”. The part went to FORD [obviously], but SPIELBERG found something endearing in COYOTE’S clumsiness, and when it came time to cast “KEYS”—an adult with childlike wonderment—the choice was obvious. The lesson? Sometimes being awkward pays off!

[An edited photo of COYOTE as “DR. JONES”.]

“INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE”:

[CONNERY AND FORD]

Did you know that SPIELBERG made “THE LAST CRUSADE” as an apology for “INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM” and it’s decidedly dark tone?

After the masterpiece of spirited adventure that was “INDIANA JONES AND THE RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK”, some critics and audience members felt betrayed by the grim and grusome sequel, “INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM”. Director STEVEN SPIELBERG was hardly a defender of the movie—in 1989 he admitted, “I wasn't happy with the second film at all. It was too dark, too subterranean, and much too horrific. I thought it out-poltered “POLTERGEIST”. There's not an ounce of my own personal feeling in TEMPLE OF DOOM.

SPIELBERG’S involvement in a third “INDIANA JONES” film sprang from his desire to apologize to viewers for the series’ disappointing second outing, and to revive the earnest spirit of the original. He rehired supporting stars DENHOLM ELLIOTT and JOHN RHYS-DAVIES to double down on the “RAIDERS” ambiance.

41c7040d53f70c81206e407d8e8fc7cd.jpg

[RHYS-DAVIES AND ELLIOTT]

Did you know that “THE LAST CRUSADE” went through a couple writers and ideas?

A handful of writers considered for the film and they all had some rather interresting ideas:

GEORGE LUCAS:

LUCAS proposed the idea of “INDY” facing off against a ghost in SCOTLAND while bound for the discovery of THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH. He dubbed the story “INDIANA JONES AND THE MONKEY KING”.

CHRIS COLUMBUS:

[COLUMBUS]

SPIELBERG brought in screenwriter CHRIS COLUMBUS, with whom he had previously collaborated on “THE GOONIES” and “GREMLINS”. In his first go at the script, COLUMBUS fleshed out LUCAS’ Scottish ghost idea (developing the character as the late “BARON SEAMUS SEAGROVE III”) but replaced THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH with THE PEACHES OF IMMORTALITY, a construct of Chinese mythology. Also present in COLUMBUS’ first draft were a 200-year-old pygmy, a cannibalistic African tribe, and a college student named “BETSY” whose love for “DR. JONES” tests the limits of sanity.

COLUMBUS took another crack at the script, this time including a major sequence in which the titular “MONKEY KING” challenges “INDY” to a game of chess, using real people as pieces who suffer quite the sour fate if captured. Additionally, this version sees “INDY” get hitched to archaeologist “DR. CLARE CLARKE”, a “KATHARINE HEPBURN type.” The living chess game idea was later used in “HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER’S STONE” [2001] which COLUMBUS also Directed [Although this scene was already written in the book by “H.P.” auther J.K. ROWLING - coincidence?].

[the chess scene from “HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER’S STONE”]

MENNO MEYJES:

SPIELBERG then replaced COLUMBUS with “THE COLOR PURPLE” Screenwriter MENNO MEYJES, who introduced elements that would ultimately reach the screen in “THE LAST CRUSADE”, such as THE HOLY GRAIL and the character of “HENRY JONES SR.”. MEYJES’S script concluded with “INDY’S” father rising to heaven upon the discovery of the Grail and “INDY” himself marrying a former NUN named “CHANTAL”.

Did you know that SPIELBERG was afraid of using THE HOLY GRAIL concept?

[“INDY” AND THE HOLY GRAIL!]

“THE LAST CRUSADE’S” eventual screenwriter JEFFREY BOAM held onto THE HOLY GRAIL element despite SPIELBERG’S uncertainty about how it might be received. His apprehensions came from the association of the sacred cup with the 1975 comedy film “MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL”. “Of course, I was worried that people would hear ‘Holy Grail,’ and they would immediately think about a white rabbit attacking “MONTY PYTHON,” Spielberg told “ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY”: “My first reaction was to say, ‘Everybody run away! Run away!’”

hqdefault.jpg

[“THE KILLER RABBIT OF CAERBANNOG” launching itself at one of THE KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE in a scene from “MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL” - 1975.]

[BOAM]

Did you know that SPIELBERG and LUCAS also hired a renowned playwright as a Ghostwriter for most of the material between “INDY” and “HENRY”?

Since the relationship between Indy and his estranged father, played by Sean Connery, provided the emotional meat of the story, Spielberg and Lucas hired a ghostwriter to bolster the gravity of the characters’ interactions. Celebrated playwright SIR TOM STOPPARD contributed the bulk of the Jones boys’ material but didn’t receive a writing credit.

Did you know that STEVEN SPIELBERG befriended the KING AND QUEEN OF JORDAN?

Much of Last Crusade was shot in PETRA, JORDAN, during the reign of KING HUSSEIN BIN TALAL and QUEEN NOOR. The royal family was invited to the set to observe production, and in turn developed a rapport with SPIELBERG. THE KING actually loaned PARAMOUNT the four horses seen in the final sequence of “THE LAST CRUSADE”, and THE QUEEN occasionally gave SPIELBERG a ride to shooting locations.

“INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL”:

Did you know that THE CRYSTAL SKULLS are real

The crystal skulls of the title actually exist. Twelve of them are housed in various museums and private collections across the world but they have recently been dismissed as fakes. The film is based on the legend that the ancient Maya possessed 13 crystal skulls, which must be lined up or piled in a pyramid on or before the 21st of December 2012, the last day of the Mayan calendar, otherwise the globe will fly off its axis. Mayans still worship them and there are real-life skull hunters.

[Three of the thirteen CRYSTAL SKULLS.]

Did you know that SPIELBERG’S daughter is the girl who punched “MUTT”?

“MUTT WILLIAMS (SHIA LABEOUF) was a divisive character in the “INDIANA JONES” fanbase, with many not enjoying the character at all. But for all the hate “MUTT” got, one of his more memorable scenes saw a woman punch him in a diner when “INDY” told him to cause a distraction. Some may be surprised to learn that the girl who punched “MUTT” is the daughter of STEVEN SPIELBERG and KATE CAPSHAW, SASHA SPIELBERG. For those who may have forgotten, KATE starred in “THE TEMPLE OF DOOM” as “INDY’S” main love interest, “WILLIE SOTT”.

slugger.jpg

[Two shots of SASHA SPIELBERG throwing a punch at LABEOUF.]

In 2000, SPIELBERG’S personal interest for another “INDIANA JONES” movie was ignited when his son asked when the remaining two “INDIANA JONES” movies would be released.

Did you know that LABEOUF is not returning to the series is because he said some bad things about his performance in “THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL”?

[SHIA LEBOUF as “MUTT WILLIAMS”]

When they were doing the press junkets for this movie; SPIELBERG famously told LABEOUF not to pick his nose in public. Also, LABEOUF criticized the movie to the press several times after it came out: "I feel like I dropped the ball on the legacy that people loved and cherished," LABEOUF said. "...You get to monkey-swinging and things like that and you can blame it on the writer and you can blame it on STEVEN. But the actor's job is to make it come alive and make it work, and I couldn't do it. So that's my fault. Simple." LABEOUF went on to saying later that doing this destroyed his relationship with SPIELBERG: LABEOUF revealed that his “KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL” comments "deeply ruptured" his relationship with the legendary filmmaker: "He told me there's a time to be a human being and have an opinion, and there's a time to sell cars," LABEOUF said at the time. "It brought me freedom, but it also killed my spirits because this was a dude I looked up to like a sensei." HARRISON FORD also called LABEOUF a 'f—-ing idiot' for critizing the movie to the press as well: "I think he was a f—-ing idiot," FORD said. "As an actor, I think it's my obligation to support the film without making a complete a— of myself. It's no surprise then, that after all this, LABEOUF was fired from the “INDIANA JONES” Franchise. A recent article about the franchise made this clear: "SHIA LABEOUF will not be returning as “MUTT WILLIAMS” in the upcoming fifth “INDIANA JONES” film”, screenwriter DAVID KOEPP told ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY.

Did you know that PARAMOUNT wanted “INDY” to use a “CGI-WHIP” in “INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL”?

It should be said that “INDIANA JONES” without his whip would be like “BATMAN” without his Batarangs, or “LUKE SKYWALKER” without his lightsaber. However, this terrifying thought almost became reality, with studio executives wanting FORD to use a CGI whip in the movie. they thought it would help them get past some new movie safety rules.

Harrison Ford, though, was incensed by this suggestion and inssisted on using an actual whip that he could swing around in the movie. While a CGI whip would've given Indy more spectacular stunts, it would've robbed the movie of a sense of realism.

Did you know that because FORD’S workout’s made it so he could still wear “INDY’S” outfit in “CRYSTAL SKULL”?

FORD has kept himself in such good shape over the years that his costume measurements for this movie had not changed from those in “INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE”. He also performed many of his own stunts, because stunt technology had become safer since 1989. He also felt it improved his performance.

Did you know that HARRISON FORD is not the only actor to appear in the original trilogy?

The late WRESTLER/STUNTMAN/ACTOR PAT ROACH had small roles in the first three films. He died of cancer in JULY 17, 2004. Because of this reason “INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL” and “INDIANA JONES 5” are the only two films in the series that he does not appear in.

[ROACH as both the “GERMAN MECHANIC” and the “GIANT SHERPA” IN “INDIANA JONES AND THE RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK”.]

Unfortunately there aren’t many behind the scenes secrets to talk about other SPIELBEGR handing Directing duties over to JAMES MANGOLD and FORD injuring himself amongst other things. So i’m going to end things here and maybe i’ll update when more information becomes available.

Goodbye for now everyone!
